Sony and Rockstar Games have officially confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI plays best on PS5. And they did not say it just once — while Sony made the announcement on the PlayStation Blog, Rockstar itself added the “Plays Best on PS5” logo to its own Ultimate Edition advertisement and urged fans to pre-order exclusively on PlayStation. Xbox was not mentioned in the ad at all.
What Exactly Are Sony and Rockstar Promising?
The joint PlayStation Blog post lists three specific PS5 advantages for GTA 6:
- DualSense haptics — the controller’s haptic feedback reacts to every in-game action, adaptive triggers provide dynamic resistance, and the integrated speaker adds sounds directly into the player’s hands
- Tempest 3D AudioTech — spatial audio precisely positions every sound, from the streets of Vice City to the swamps of the Grassrivers
- Ultra-high speed SSD — GTA 6 uses the PS5’s SSD to deliver near-instant load times across the vast world of Leonida
The exact wording from the PlayStation Blog reads: “Thanks to the close partnership between Sony Interactive Entertainment and Rockstar Games, Grand Theft Auto VI will play best on PS5 by taking advantage of PS5’s immersive features to deliver a deeply engaging single-player experience when it launches on November 19.”
What This Actually Means — Read Carefully
The key phrase in the entire statement is “immersive features.” Sony is not selling a technical edge over Xbox — it is selling the feel of the experience. DualSense haptics, 3D audio, and fast SSD loading are standard PS5 advantages present in most PlayStation games. No official statement says GTA 6 will run at a higher frame rate or resolution on PS5 than on Xbox Series X.
Digital Foundry had previously suggested GTA 6 will likely run at 30fps on both platforms, based on how Rockstar traditionally optimises its titles around CPU performance. Neither Sony nor Rockstar have confirmed any Performance or Quality modes so far.
The PS5 Pro does carry a “PS5 Pro Enhanced” badge in the PlayStation Store, but no specific improvements — higher frame rate? better resolution? — have been detailed by either party.
Rockstar Goes Further — Xbox Absent From Its Own Ad
The strongest signal is not the Sony Blog post but Rockstar’s own Twitter. A GTA 6 Ultimate Edition ad posted on June 29, 2026 carries the “Plays Best on PS5” logo and ends with “Pre-Order Now on PlayStation 5” — and Xbox does not appear anywhere in it. The graphic does not mention Microsoft once. For a game launching simultaneously on both platforms, that is unprecedented.
Sony’s marketing deal with Rockstar is clearly deeper than anyone expected. Pre-order data backs it up — PS5 is outselling Xbox at a ratio of 6 to 1.
