GTA 6 PS5 vs Xbox: Why 6× More People Are Buying on PlayStation

GTA 6 pre-orders went live on June 25, 2026, and within hours the numbers were already making headlines. According to IGN Finds data, players are pre-ordering GTA 6 on PS5 over Xbox at a ratio of 6 to 1 — with some sources putting it as high as 8 to 1. For a game launching simultaneously on both platforms, that’s a result worth digging into. Why such a massive gap? And what does it say about where the console war stands in 2026?

What the Numbers Actually Mean

First, some honesty: the data comes from IGN Finds affiliate link clicks, not official pre-order numbers from Rockstar or Take-Two. Xbox pushed back immediately, stating: “This doesn’t represent pre-order data.” Technically, they’re right — clicking an affiliate link isn’t the same as a completed purchase.

That said, the data isn’t worthless. IGN reaches millions of readers and its affiliate clicks reflect genuine purchase intent. On top of that, RockstarINTEL’s own community poll found that 70% of players plan to play GTA 6 on PS5 or PS5 Pro, with only 24% targeting Xbox Series X and a mere 5% on Series S. That’s fully consistent with the 6:1 figure from IGN. Crucially, Xbox’s pushback never actually denied that PlayStation is dominating — they only questioned the methodology. Make of that what you will.

Reason #1: Install Base — PlayStation Simply Has More Players

Start with the math. Sony officially reported 93.7 million PS5 consoles sold as of March 31, 2026. Microsoft stopped reporting hardware sales figures years ago, but industry estimates place Xbox Series X/S at roughly 34.7 million units. That puts the PS5 install base at approximately 2.7 times the size of Xbox’s.

If players on both platforms were equally likely to buy GTA 6, you’d expect pre-orders to split roughly 2.7:1 in PlayStation’s favour. The actual 6:1 ratio is more than double that expectation — which means Xbox players aren’t buying in at the same rate, even after accounting for the hardware gap. That’s the key question.

Reason #2: Sony Paid for Marketing and It Shows

Rockstar and Sony struck a marketing partnership whose scale was impossible to miss from day one. PS5 consoles now display a custom GTA 6 startup animation — something Sony has never done before. PlayStation officially markets GTA 6 as playing best on PS5, citing DualSense haptics and 3D Audio. The PlayStation Store, PlayStation social channels, and Sony’s entire marketing machine have been pushing GTA 6 as if it were a platform exclusive.

Xbox, by contrast, has produced almost no promotional material around GTA 6. No co-branded campaigns, no bundles, no activations. The community noticed — and has been joking that GTA 6 feels like a PlayStation exclusive despite launching on Xbox too. When an undecided buyer sees a GTA 6 ad, they see PlayStation branding. Not Xbox.

Reason #3: The Game Pass Paradox

This might be the most underreported factor. Xbox Game Pass — the subscription that bundles hundreds of games — has spent years conditioning a generation of players to never pay full price for new releases. Why drop $80 when your subscription covers hundreds of titles?

GTA 6 is not on Game Pass and almost certainly won’t be for a long time. But the habit is ingrained. Analysts cited by Metro suggest the subscription model has trained some Xbox players to skip pre-orders on major titles by default, even when those titles aren’t actually available on Game Pass. PlayStation Plus has never offered same-day AAA releases at anything close to the same scale — so PS5 players simply don’t have the same wait-and-see instinct when a big game drops.

Reason #4: Xbox Raised Console Prices — Right Before GTA 6

The timing couldn’t have been worse. At exactly the moment GTA 6 pre-orders were going live — the biggest game launch in years — Microsoft announced Xbox console price increases effective August 1, 2026. The Xbox Series X 1TB is going from $649 to $800. The Series S 512GB jumps from $299 to $399.

Sony, meanwhile, has held its price heading into the GTA 6 launch window. In a situation where millions of PS4 and Xbox One holdouts are finally deciding to go current-gen specifically because of GTA 6, Microsoft chose this precise moment to make their hardware $150 more expensive. Sony is quietly collecting the rewards of PlayStation branding on the biggest game of the year while Xbox makes itself harder to justify buying.

Reason #5: GTA Has Always Been a PlayStation Franchise

This is the psychological factor that often gets overlooked in the data discussion. The GTA series has a deeply rooted PlayStation identity. GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas were all PS2 timed exclusives — PlayStation players got them months or years before anyone else. GTA IV and GTA V had PlayStation Plus DLC partnerships. In the minds of millions of players, GTA simply belongs on PlayStation, even if that’s no longer technically true.

Recently leaked data reinforced this: GTA V and GTA Online generate more revenue for Rockstar on PlayStation than on Xbox even today, years into this generation. The loyal GTA community lives on PlayStation — and that’s almost certainly where it’ll be for GTA 6 too.

What This Means for the Console War

The 6:1 pre-order split on GTA 6 is more than just a number — it’s a symptom of a deeper structural problem for Xbox. Microsoft has strategically pivoted away from console hardware toward its ecosystem: Game Pass, PC, cloud gaming. Those are legitimate business decisions, but they come with a visible cost: when players are choosing a platform for the biggest game of the decade, they’re choosing PlayStation.

Push Square summed it up precisely: “The PS5 install base is roughly 3× larger than Xbox — but GTA 6 pre-orders are 6:1. That means an individual PS5 owner is twice as likely to be buying the game as an individual Xbox owner.” That’s a number Microsoft has to take seriously.

To be fair: Xbox is reportedly setting its own pre-order records for GTA 6 in absolute terms. The game will sell extremely well on both platforms. Microsoft’s problem isn’t that GTA 6 will flop on Xbox — it’s that the biggest cultural moment in gaming in 2026 is visually and emotionally associated with their competitor.

Which Platform Should You Buy GTA 6 On?

If you already have a PS5, the answer writes itself. If you’re choosing a new console specifically for GTA 6, PS5 currently offers better marketing support, a version of the game that Rockstar worked on directly with Sony engineers, and cheaper hardware than the freshly-hiked Xbox. The PS5 Pro additionally promises 60fps at higher quality settings.

Xbox players have no reason to switch — the game launches simultaneously and Series X is technically the more powerful console on paper. But the pre-order numbers tell a clear story: GTA 6 is a PlayStation moment. Rockstar knows it, Sony knows it, and apparently so does everyone buying the game.
