GTA 6 at 60 FPS? Digital Foundry Says No — and the Reasoning Is Hard to Dismiss

A few days ago, news arrived that won’t please anyone hoping for a smooth GTA 6 experience — analysts at Digital Foundry declared that 60 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series X is “wishful thinking” and “a bridge too far.” According to them, GTA 6 will run at 30 FPS on consoles. And what’s more — even the PS5 Pro probably won’t change that.

Why Does Digital Foundry Say No?

Digital Foundry conducted a frame-by-frame analysis of the trailers and pre-order screenshots. Their conclusion rests on two pillars.

1. The CPU is the real problem, not the GPU

Most people focus on graphics when debating performance — resolution, ray tracing, textures. But Digital Foundry points to the CPU. GTA 6 renders dense NPC crowds with their own AI, dynamic weather, complex vehicle physics on land, sea, and air, and a city with a living ecosystem. These are all extremely demanding CPU operations.

Analyst William Judd put it plainly: dense urban environments are the most likely to cause frame rate drops in simulation games — and GTA 6 looks “another level of magnitude more challenging” than Dragon’s Dogma 2 or Baldur’s Gate 3, both of which already struggle to hold frame rates in busy areas. Add vehicle physics and the ability to traverse the world at speed by car, boat, or plane, and the CPU demands become extraordinary.

2. The trailers themselves suggest 30 FPS

Digital Foundry analysed the trailer footage and concluded it is rendered at 30 FPS — not 60. If Rockstar were targeting a 60 FPS Performance Mode, the trailer would likely run at 60 FPS to showcase the capability. Instead, we see consistent 30 FPS footage with ray-traced global illumination and per-pixel lighting — technologies that are themselves enormously demanding.

What About PS5 Pro?

The PS5 Pro is the most powerful console of the current generation — but its advantage lies mainly in a more powerful GPU, better ray tracing, and PSSR upscaling support. The CPU boost over the base PS5 is only marginal. And GTA 6 is a CPU problem, not a GPU problem.

Digital Foundry therefore concludes that PS5 Pro will most likely offer a 30 FPS or 40 FPS mode — not 60 FPS. A 40 FPS mode on a 120Hz display is, according to the analysts, a solid compromise: a frame time of 25 ms sits exactly halfway between 30 FPS (33.3 ms) and 60 FPS (16.7 ms) — subjectively much smoother than 30, achievable without massive sacrifices to visual quality.

A Polish Insider Says the Opposite — Who Is Right?

Polish insider Borys Nieśpielak — who previously correctly leaked the Fool’s Theory expansion for The Witcher 3 before its announcement — claims Rockstar is developing two graphics modes, including a 60 FPS Performance Mode. This directly contradicts Digital Foundry’s conclusions.

Who is right? The truth is that Digital Foundry does not have access to a GTA 6 dev kit — their analysis is expert, but still speculative. Rockstar has a history of surprising people. GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 both launched at 30 FPS on last-gen consoles — and both later received 60 FPS patches for current-gen hardware.

💡 Rockstar’s historical pattern: GTA 5 launched in 2013 at 30 FPS → received a PS5/Xbox 60 FPS mode in 2022. RDR2 launched in 2018 at 30 FPS → received a 60 FPS patch in 2021. If GTA 6 launches at 30 FPS, a 60 FPS update may come — but likely only with next-gen hardware or the PC version.

Does 30 FPS Actually Matter for the Experience?

The honest answer: it depends on what you are used to. For players who have never played on PC or a 60 FPS console — GTA 5 at 30 FPS on PS3 and PS4 was played by millions without issue. For players accustomed to 60 FPS — the drop back to 30 will be noticeable, especially in fast-paced action and gunfights.

GTA 6 will be visually unprecedented. The physics, AI, underwater world, and living city all require computational power. Rockstar may have made a conscious decision to target stable 30 FPS rather than unstable 60 FPS. That is a legitimate choice — and one the series has made before.
